Irish Grid System Input & Project Confidentiality

06/11/2007

All surveys and projects on Biology.ie now take Irish Grid System input. This was implemented after requests from biologists working

in the field. Although hand-held GPS devices produce readings in decimal latitude and longitude, biologists are limited to using the Irish Grid System because of demands by scientific journals who traditionally use this method in publications. Often the six figure format is used, providing accuracy to 100m. Biology.ie has implemented the 10 figure format allowing for greater accuracy (down to 1 metre). Six figure formats such as O 008 741 can be entered by adding in trailing zeros as O 00800 74100.
This is a significant addition to Biology.ie as it will allow data held in databases such as Recorder to be entered directly without conversion.
Projects may now be password protected, enabling data to be kept confidential. For more information contact Biology.ie on info {@ } biology . ie.
