Darwin's Tree of Life

Charles Darwin kept a small note book in his inside pocket. He carried this little book with him everywhere and jotted down ideas as they came to him.

Many of the ideas in it were either scientifically unproven or unprovable or quite simply unorthodox. At the top of one page he wrote' I think' and sketched out below it was a diagram resembling a highly branching tree. This tree showed the evolutionary relationships between living things. It later become known as the tree of life. Each generation of scientists has grafted on new branches and pruned out old ones as our understanding of these relationships was refined. DNA analysis has helped produce today's tree.

In the video below David Attenborough explains the latest view of this tree of life.
