Rose Chafers and Ants

17/05/2007

Rose chafters are out in force at the moment in the Burren. These little fellows love to feed on the pollen of the Burnet Rose. Oddly enough,

they are often approached by three or four ants that appear to 'clean' them, and remove some of the burnet rose pollen. At the time I took the photograph here the ants were just leaving (two in the photo) after spending a few minutes running up and down its legs and over the back. The chafer was unperturbed by it. If you have any information on this, we would be delighted to hear from you.
